That was one of the worst things I've ever seen.
"Oh, my stock American truck can't compete with purpose built racing cars with engines nearly twice as big? It's not very good then."
Glad to see Top Gear was as rubbish when it comes to the details back in the 90's as is is today.

I think the goal was to make the public aware of just how fast a drag car is. By sounding as astounded as joe blow would when they hear there is things that go faster than Lambo's.
To a car-lover this comes off as miss-informed, unknowing, lack of attention to details. But I wonder if my reasoning above is really the reason.
